Course Overview

In order to effectively lead others, managers and supervisors must themselves be individuals who display personal effectiveness. Only then can they build up the authority and character traits necessary for driving work teams forward.

Under the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Leadership & People Management Framework (LPM), a "Develop Self " course has been developed to equip leaders and managers with the skills and knowledge for self development.

Leaders must be able to demonstrate self awareness and be committed to self development to capitalize on their strengths and address their weaknesses. They need to promote organizational values and ethics by role modeling desired behaviours, and be able to persuade and positively influence others through effective communication. The "Develop Self" course equips participants with these skills to raise their competency to a WSQ level.

Course Duration

24hr (3 days)

Assessment

Formative assessment which may comprise of role plays, group discussions, presentation, case studies, business plans, games and oral/written questioning

Course Outline

Communicate Effectively

  • Adapt communication style to suit work context
  • Communicate ideas and concepts in the workplace using appropriate verbal and non verbal cues
  • Seek comments and feedback to ensure message is received and understood
  • Address barriers to communication

Lead Team Decision Making
  • Gather necessary information for decision making and explain process to team members
  • Evaluate the risks and consequences of potential actions or decisions
  • Work with team to develop and assess options that will lead to successful outcomes
  • Select most appropriate decision in relation to team and organization objectives

Develop and Maintain Professional Competence
  • Review own performance to identify strengths and limitations of professional competence and management practices
  • Seek opportunities to develop skills and knowledge required of work role
  • Maintain communication and engagement with team leaders to identify new and emerging areas of professional practice
