Target Audience

This course is for adult learners who need English to

  • communicate using basic phrases and sentences to handle some difficulty situations in every day life;
  • read and write letters of the English alphabet and numbers, sight words and simple phrases;
  • write basic personal information on simplified forms;
  • handle routine entry-level jobs that involve only basic oral and written communciation in English to do their tasks.

Course Overview

Workplace Literacy in English is a core component of the WDA Workplace Skills Qualification which workers need to be competent at the workplace. It is also absolutely useful for everyone who is currently seeking to employment.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to use English to:

  • clarify or request clarification;
  • respond appropriately to common personal information questions;
  • receive and respond to instructions;
  • identify or use appropriate language in social situation;
  • ask for, give or clarify directions;
  • interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services;
  • interpret and use maps for travel needs;
  • interpret clock time;
  • identify the months of the year and the days of the weeks;
  • read, interpret, and follow directions on public signs and building directories;
  • interpret general work-related vobcabulary;
  • record information on forms, charts and checklist.

Course Duration

90 hours over 15 weeks (Twice a week, each lesson is 3 hours)

Course Outline

The course covers the following key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the English language:

Listening

  • Understand and participate in limited conversation using memorized words, phrases and short sentences dealing with very familiar topics.
  • Comprehend and follow basic instructions and procedures when given physical cues.
  • Identify by name some familiar objects, people, events, family members, body parts, months, clothing, foods and objects.

Speaking
  • Speak using limited vocabulary related to simple, elementary needs.
  • Respond to very basic and familiar “who”, “what” and “where” questions with one word responses or sentence fragments in familiar contexts.
  • Use basic words and phrases in social greetings such as “Hello”, “Good morning/ afternoon/evening”; “How are you?”, “Thank you”.

Reading
  • Recognize increasing number of signs, symbols, labels and captions in the immediate environment.
  • Recognize vocabulary that communicates some personal and survival needs.
  • Recognize most upper and lower case letters of the alphabet in print.
  • Recognize simple vocabulary and short phrases needed to respond to basic questions or to fill in forms such as name, age, telephone number, address, date, day and time.
  • Comprehend and follows simple one- to two-steps written directions with given illustrations.
  • Identify a few familiar objects, family members and basic household items.
  • Recognize and names numbers (up to 20).

Writing
  • Copy letters of the alphabet with increased accuracy in stroke order (upper and lower case print)
  • Copy simple printed words
  • Fill out short forms with essential personal information (name, address and phone number)
  • Apply letter-sound relationships to spell simple words.
  • Copy numerals (up to 20).

  • Pair work, small group and large group work
  • Dialogues
  • Listening exercises
  • Activity-based exercises

Statement of Attainment (SOA) from Workplace Development Agency (WDA)

  • Price (Includes GST) $1,444.50 (For Foreigner)
  • Nett Price after funding - for Singaporeans/PR $53.50* (inclusive of GST)

* All trainees are required to take the pre and post CAT test and a minimum of 75% attendance is required.
