Target Audience
This course is for adult learners who need English to
- function independently in survival and work situations;
- clarify general meaning and communicate on the telephone on familiar topics;
- understand and participate in practical and social conversations and in technical discussions in their own field;
- handle most reading and writing tasks related to life roles; read and interpret most non-simplified materials; interpret routine charts, graphs and labels; fill out medical information forms and job applications;
- understand work-related conversations and interact with the public;
- meet work demands with confidence and follow written instructions in work manuals.
Course Overview
Workplace Literacy English is a core component of the WDA Workplace Skills Qualification which workers need to acquire to be competent at the workplace. It is also an absolutely useful skill for anyone who is currently seeking employment.
At the end of the course, participants should be able to use English to:
- Identify or use appropriate language for informational purposes, to influence or persuade.
- Ask for, give or clarify directions.
- Select and analyse work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others orally.
- Converse about daily and leisure activities and personal interests.
- Demonstrate effective telephone techniques.
- Interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services.
- Interpret and use maps for travel needs.
- Interpret permit and license requirements.
- Interpret general work-related vocabulary, signs, charts, diagrams, forms and procedures.
- Interpret written workplace announcements and notices.
- Interpret visual representations such as symbols, blueprints, flowcharts and schematics.
- Interpret letters, articles and information about work-related topics and technical information.
- Interpret and write work-related notes, memos, letters and email.
- Take notes or write a summary of an outline.
- Take and interpret telephone messages, leave messages on answering machines and interpret recorded messages.
- Report progress on activities, status of assigned tasks, and problems and other situations affecting job completion
- Select and analyse work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others in writing.

90 hours over 15 weeks (Twice a week, each lesson is 3 hours)

Course Outline
The course covers the following key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the English language:
Listening and Speaking
- Express immediate and future needs and plans of a personal and work related nature with limited vocabulary.
- Arranges phrases, clauses and sentences into correct and meaningful patterns, showing some evidence of connected discourse.
- Describe obligations, make comparisons and describe event and situations.
- Participate in social conversations.
- Ask and respond to questions, provide advice or reminders, describe past events and routines.
- Use phrases and simple sentences to show evidence of connected discourse.
Reading
- Locate specific ideas from text, graphs, diagrams, charts, tables, lists and schedules.
- Determine the intended meaning of synonyms, antonyms and homonyms.
- Identify the basic sequence of events and make relevant predictions about information.
- Comprehend and follow one to five-step written directions for work related activities.
- Compare and contrast elements in reading selections about the same topics.
- Use organizational features of text such as table of content, indexes, glossaries, titles, headings, captions and key words.
- Use root words and affixes to determine the meaning of most unknown words.
- Determine the intended meaning of most words with multiple meanings using word, sentences and paragraph clues.
- Draw valid conclusions about the purpose and main ideas of text and the writer's intent.
Writing
- Write texts, up to and including paragraphs in the form of detailed messages and short narrative.
- Write multi-paragraph text of several simple sentences.
- Write short memos, straightforward letters or notes, to convey information.
- Draft and outline multi-page reports on familiar events and activities.
- Uses graphic organizers to organize writings with some guidance.
- Use standard English dictionary to determine meanings of unknown words.
- Take detailed messages (name, address, phone number, and short text from phone calls).
- Demonstrate control over simple patterns using compound subjects and verbs.
- Spell irregular verb forms correctly.
- Apply punctuation correctly.
- Summarise information for charts, graphs and tables adequately.
